Emergency Dentist in Northampton: What It Costs to Be Seen
If a tooth has just gone wrong somewhere in Northampton, there's a good chance the pain isn't the only thing on your mind. There's also the quieter worry underneath it: what is this going to cost me, and can anyone actually see me?
When we read through the prices Northampton practices publish for an emergency appointment, the cost of simply being seen ran from £25 to £140, and that's before a single thing has been done to the tooth. That's more than five times the price for the same kind of appointment in the same town. So let's walk through what's behind that, because once you know how it works, you can pick your route calmly.
The Two Bills Behind an Emergency Visit
The first thing that catches people out is that an emergency visit usually comes as two separate bills. The first pays for the dentist to see you: the examination, working out what's wrong, and telling you your options. The second pays for whatever is then done to the tooth, whether that's a root canal, a filling or taking the tooth out.
Think of it like calling a mechanic out to a car that won't start. There's the fee for coming to look, and then there's the repair. Knowing which one a price refers to is half the battle when you're comparing.
What It Costs Just to Be Seen in Northampton
Here's what Northampton practices were publishing for that first bill in October 2026.
At the lower end, a dental group with a practice in the town charges £25 for an emergency exam. X-rays are charged on top of that, though, at £9 for a small one and £35 for a large one. A toothache often needs an X-ray, because a dentist can't see inside a tooth or under the gum without one, so with one small X-ray that £25 becomes £34, and with a large one it becomes £60.
At the other end, another practice charges £73 for an emergency consultation if you're already one of its registered patients, and £140 if you're not. That gap is worth noticing, because when you're in pain and calling round, most of the practices you ring won't be ones you're registered with.
And in every case, the treatment itself is priced separately on top.
When Northampton's Dentists Are Open
Price is one thing; being able to get in is another. The practices we looked at keep ordinary daytime hours, with some open into the early evening on weekdays and for shorter hours at weekends. One practice says plainly that it doesn't currently offer out-of-hours emergency care, and another points its patients to a separate weekend-only out-of-hours service that charges out-of-hours fees.
None of that is unusual for a town practice. It does mean that outside those hours, it's worth knowing how the NHS urgent route works.
The NHS Urgent Route Through 111
Northamptonshire's NHS urgent dental service is open to anyone, whether you're registered with a dentist or not. The way in is NHS 111: you fill in the form online or ring 111, and the urgent appointment is booked through them. It's meant for the things that can't wait, like bad toothache, a tooth that's broken or been knocked out, an abscess, swelling, or bleeding that won't stop.
The NHS charge for urgent treatment is currently £27.90. That covers getting the urgent problem under control, and anything beyond it can mean further visits and further charges. It's a perfectly good route if you can get a slot when you need one, and our comparison of NHS and private emergency dentists goes through how the two differ.
Whichever route you choose, keep one exception in your back pocket: swelling that makes breathing or swallowing hard means calling 999.
What the Treatment Itself Costs
Once you've been seen, what you pay next comes down to what's wrong with the tooth. Here's how ours are priced, so you have a real set of numbers to compare any quote with.
White fillings run from £149 for a small one up to £349 for a large one. If the nerve is involved, root canal treatment is from £399, and that's the treatment that saves the tooth rather than losing it. A wisdom tooth removal is £549, a complex extraction is from £550, and a surgical extraction is from £595. A crown is from £650.
Every one of those is on our pricing page, and you'll get the exact figure for your tooth before anything starts. That's the part that matters most when you're sore and anxious, because you can say yes knowing exactly what you'll pay.
The Emergency Appointment at UrgentCare Dental
The first bill at UrgentCare Dental is our £20 emergency appointment, X-rays included, rising to £50 if you're seen after 11pm. Either way it's one small figure, with nothing added on for the X-ray itself. From there you get a plain explanation of what's wrong and a price for fixing it, and where clinically possible the treatment happens at the same visit.
Our Northampton clinic is opening at number 23 on Harborough Road in Kingsthorpe, just down from the Cock crossroads on the A508, and like every UrgentCare Dental clinic it will be open round the clock, every day of the year. That matters most in the late evening and overnight, when the practices above are closed. There's a bit more about who we are in our hello to Northampton, and if it's been a while since you saw any dentist, our first dentist visit in years guide might put your mind at ease.
Drive Times to Kingsthorpe
Harborough Road is a main road north out of town, which makes Kingsthorpe easier to reach than the town centre for a lot of people on the north side. Spinney Hill and Boughton are five or six minutes away on a clear road, Moulton and Parklands seven or eight, the town centre about eight, and Brixworth about eleven.
From further afield, it's around 23 minutes from Wellingborough, 24 from Daventry, 26 from Market Harborough, 30 from Kettering and about half an hour from central Milton Keynes. Those are drive times on clear roads, so allow a little more at busy times. When a tooth has been nagging at you for days, a half-hour drive to a price you already know can be well worth it.
Your Questions, Answered Straight
How much is an emergency dentist in Northampton?
The practices whose emergency fees are published charged from £25 to £140 to see you in October 2026, with X-rays sometimes charged on top and treatment always charged separately. At UrgentCare Dental the emergency appointment is £20 with X-rays included.
Can I see an emergency dentist in Northampton without being registered?
Yes. You don't need to be registered with an NHS dental practice to use the urgent route through 111, and our emergency appointment is open to new patients too. One Northampton practice we looked at does charge almost twice as much to see you if you're not one of its registered patients.
How much does an urgent NHS dental appointment cost?
The current NHS charge for urgent dental treatment is £27.90. Further treatment after the urgent visit can cost extra.
Do I need an X-ray at an emergency appointment?
Often, yes. A lot of dental pain comes from inside the tooth or below the gum, where a dentist can't see without one, which is exactly why we include it in the appointment rather than adding it on.

The pain is miserable while it lasts, but it can nearly always be put right, and once you know what it'll cost, the worry gets a lot smaller.
